Solitary Angler’s Quick-Start School

Where: The Private Holy Waters on the Cimarron River
Time: Saturday May 29th and 31st

OBJECTIVES

  1. To gain proficiency in fly casting*
  2. To be able to select the proper tackle and set it up
  3. To be able to tie good knots
  4. To be able to select the proper fly
  5. To get a good drift

*The object of fly casting is to present the fly where you want, when you want, the way the fish wants it, so you can catch fish!

SCHOOL OUTLINE:

Friday, May 29th, Day One

  • 5:00 pm – arrive at Hacienda de Cimarron
  • 5:00 – 7:00pm – Wader fitting and gear selection
  • 7:00 pm – Dinner in Hacienda de Cimarron
  • 8:00 – 9:00 pm Tackle talk in atrium

Saturday, May 30th, Day Two

  • 7:30 – Breakfast at Hacienda
    • 8:30 – 12:30 FF School
      1.    Casting (basics of casting)
      2.    Knots & rigging (clinch knot- pg. 19, surgeon’s knot- pg. 6)
      3.    Flies – identification and selection (Dries and Wets – pg 24 – 25)
  • 12:30 to 1:30 picnic lunch
    • 1:30 to 4:30 – FF School
      1.    Review of Basic Casting & Line Control
      2.    Approaching and Reading the Water
      3.    Presenting the Fly; Hooking and Catching Fish
      4.    Handling & Releasing Fish
  • 4:30 to 6:30- Open Fishing Period
  • 7:00 pm – Bar-B-Q Dinner at cabins
  • 8:00 pm – Fun Film Fest in the Hacienda

Sunday May 31st , Day Three

  • 7:30 AM Breakfast in the Hacienda
    • 8:30 to 12:30 – FF School
      1.    Casting Techniques (Line Control Review, False Casting, shooting and stripping line)
      2.    Bugs –Basic Entomology, fly ID and selection (what fish eat – pg. 12)
      3.    Fishing Etiquette
  • 12:30 – 1:30 – Sack Lunch
  • 1:30 – 5:00 PM – Open fishing Period
  • 5:00 PM- Shut Down and Return Gear; Depart the Holy Waters
