Solitary Anglers Quick-Start School

Where: The sprawling 178,000 acre Trinchera Ranch, near Ft. Garland, CO
Time: Friday, August 7th to Sunday, August 9th 2015

OBJECTIVES

  1. To gain proficiency in fly casting*
  2. To be able to select the proper tackle and set it up
  3. To be able to tie good knots
  4. To be able to select the proper fly
  5. To get a good drift

*The object of fly casting is to present the fly where you want, when you want, the way the fish wants it, so you can catch fish!

SCHOOL OUTLINE:

Friday, August 7th, Day One

  • Arrive Trinchera Ranch by 5:00 PM
  • 5:00 to 7:00 PM – wader fitting and gear selection
  • 7:00 PM – Dinner in lodge and welcome
  • 8:00 to 9:00 PM- Tackle talk in lodge

Saturday, August 8th , Day Two

  • 7:30 AM- Breakfast in Lodge
    • 8:30 – 12:30 FF School
      1.    Casting (basics of casting – pg. 8-10))
      2.    Knots & rigging (clinch knot- pg. 19, surgeon’s knot- pg. 6)
      3.    Flies – identification and selection (Dries and Wets – pg 24 – 25)
  • 12:30 to 1:30 lunch in lodge
    • 1:30 to 4:30 – FF School
      1.    Review of Basic Casting & Line Control
      2.    Approaching and Reading the Water
      3.    Presenting the Fly; Techniques, Hooking & Catching Fish
      4.    Handling & Releasing Fish
  • 4:30 to 6:30- Open Fishing Period
  • 7:00 pm – Dinner in lodge
  • 8:00 pm – Fun Film Fest in Conference Room

Sunday, August 9th, Day Three

  • 7:30 AM Breakfast in lodge
    • 8:30 to 12:30 – FF School
      1.    Casting Techniques (Line Control Review, False Casting, shooting line)
      2.    Bugs –Basic Entomology, fly ID and selection (what fish eat – pg. 12)
      3.    Fishing Etiquette
  • 12:30 – 1:30 – Sack Lunch
  • 1:30 – 5:00 PM – Open fishing Period
  • 5:00 PM- Shut Down and Return Gear; Depart Trinchera Ranch
